William Kelly

Kilmacow F.C. lost one of the great characters and stalwarts of the Club when Willie Kelly sadly passed away last week.

Willie was a member of the 2nd division double winning side of 1976/’77. He was also a member of the 4th division side the following season of 1977/’78 who also completed the League and Cup double.

Willie was a firm believer that football should always be played on the ground and would definitely have subscribed to the Brian Clough theory that if God wanted football played in the sky he would have put pitches in the clouds.

Therefore ‘hoof it’ and ‘row z’ were phrases that were never in Willie’s vocabulary.

He believed in his ability to play his way out of trouble (wearing his favourite no.10 jersey) and that good play would always set up scoring opportunities for the team.

After all it wasn’t his fault if the strikers were slow to react and get caught offside.

Willie spent almost his entire playing career with Kilmacow F.C. (he had brief spells with Johnville, Crusaders and Granagh) and as a result there are many events and occasions that remain vivid in the mind.

No doubt many of these have been recounted during the past week and will continue to be. He also spent some years looking after schoolboys teams.

The ‘Kilmacow F.C. Notes’ of 7th May 1982 stated that Willie was also known as Gunter (after the German player Gunter Netzer) and Van Beag ( a play on the Belgian player Van Moor).

These were players whose football philosophy Willie could subscribe to.

The Club’s pitch in Kilmacow was officially opened in August 1992 when a Kilmacow All Stars selection played against League of Ireland side Waterford.

Former Waterford players Brian Gardner and the famous Peter Thomas guested for Kilmacow.

One gem from the former Waterford keeper was ‘You’re ball watching Willie’.

As already stated many yarns will have been told over the past week.

Willie’s love of the game meant that he was regularly to be seen at matches and of course he would always have something enlightening to contribute to the discussion that would be taking place.

Alas we won’t be able to benefit from his words of wisdom again. So long Willie and may you rest in peace.

You will be sadly missed.
To Alice, Mary, Eileen and Willie’s other relatives we offer our deepest sympathy.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

Saturday 10th saw us play our local revials M V Celtic inMullinavat.

A big squad travelled up for the game. after a minutes slients forWillie Kelly a past player with the Club, the game got under way.

Even-stevens for 10mins then M.V got the break and went 1 Up.

Then from the KickOff Damian O'Sullivan (Sully) spoted the keeper of his line and scored from the halfway line. This got the lads going and they took the game to M.V.

Sully set up Tommo Geraghty with a fine pass trough the Mullinavat defence to score.

Then our defence let M.V back into the game to score.

Playing with the hill and wind Jamie Ryan sent a long ball forward, the bounce beat the out coming defence and with Tommo running on to the ball, he sloted the ball passed the outcoming Keeper. 3.2 to Kilmacow at half-time.

M.V came at the lads witheverthing for the first 10 Minutes and scored. Eamonn Halligan came on for Patrick Keane and got on the score sheet after another defence cutting pass from Damian O Sullivan.

Another change for Kilmacow saw Darren McDonald on for David Duggan.

We had a chance to kill off the game Tommo took the ball up the wing, sent in a pass to Darren Mcdonald but with his first touch of the ball, sent it wide.

A long ball from M.V saw a mix up with our keeper and his defence to give M.V Celtic a point from this Game.

Div 1A Result: Kilmacow 2 - 4 Southend

Match Day 4

At Home to Southend
Kick off 11:00am

Score:
Kilmacow 2 - 4 Southend

Our good start to the season came to a halt on Sunday morning.

The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side creating too many chances.

Darren McDonald had the only real chance of the half when he latched on to a through ball from Ray Grant only to see his shot flash past the upright.

Both defences seemed to be on top with no indications of the goal spree that was to follow.

Into the second half and we were punished for some sloppy defending from a corner from which Southend took the lead with a free header at the near post.

The same mistake was repeated a minute later, with a carbon copy of the first goal, another free header.

Southend were in the driving seat but five minutes later we were handed a lifeline when the ball fell to Tom Kirby in the area from a corner and he placed a fine shot to the back of the net.

Southend were gifted another goal two minutes later however with a mix up between goalkeeper and centre half letting Southend in for a third.

Lee Vereker then replied within minutes to reduce the deficit to one but another mix up in defence ended our hopes of a comeback with Southend once again punishing our mistake.

The less said of this game the better and a big improvement will be needed next time out.

Div 3 Result: Seaview 4 -2 Kilmacow

Our frist game of the new season saw us travel to Annestown to play Seaview
We traveled out with a big squad (16 in total). So the manager had nearly a full squad to pick from.

We started the game very slow and let Seaview run the match for the first 15mins.

Seaview scored a simply goal which seem to kick some life into the Kilmacow team. We pushed Seaview on the backfoot and with all the pressure won a corner which Eamonn Halligan sent in to the packed box to be met by the high rising Brian Cashin to power home with his head.

Still on a high after scoring the goal Kilmacow kept up the pressure on Seaview,

A well timed pass from Dermot Rockett to Thomas Geraghty split the Seaview defence to set Thomas up for Kilmacow’s second goal.

Just before half time Seaview where given a penatly which Jamie Ryan saved well to keep the score 2.1 to Kilmacow.

After the break Seaview came at Kilmacow to which Kilmacow had no reply. 3 simply goals by seaview killed of the game.

Final score 4.2 to Seaview.

Team Jamie Ryan, Denis Scully, Martin Maloney, Ger Maher, Brian Cashin, Eamonn Halligan(Paul Hogan), David Duggan, Dermot Rockett, Nicky Owens (Patrick Keane), Thomas Geraghty, Darren McDonald (Damian O Sullivan)

Subs Not Used Thomas Flynn, Noel Motherway.

Scores: B. Cashin, T. Geraghty
